Contents
After covering the contents of Levels 1 and 2, the students will have the basic grounding required for paying more attention to interpretation and for focusing their musical studies on more specialised areas. Accordingly, the aims I set myself for Level 3 are these:
1. Consolidating and extending the capabilities of the students in terms of their flute studies and their knowledge of the language and form of music.
2. Introducing the students to the field of the history of music, so that they gain the knowledge needed for performing the works appropriately as regards historical styles.
3. Arranging the music-study time so that each session includes work on the basic elements involved in learning the flute: sound production and breathing, scales and arpeggios, studies, technical exercises, repertoire, and sight-reading.
The core contents of the book correspond to the end of the Elementary syllabus.

-Subject Index: This provides a classification by subject-matter of all the book's content in terms of musical language, forms and styles. In each case, the first time any particular topic appears as the object of study is indicated. Only content that is new with respect to Levels 1 and 2 is shown, even though work does continue on the syllabuses of those levels, as previously noted.
-Index of Pieces: The pieces are classified by composers, listed in alphabetical order. The page where they can be found is given.
-The Units: This book is divided into 17 units. Units 1 to 14 each deal with a particular major or minor key with up to three sharps or flats in the key signature. Unit 15 is devoted to studying sound production. Unit 16 gives the scales and arpeggios for the keys studied. Unit 17 contains short original pieces for developing sight-reading skills.
