“Rêve” or “Dream” is the composition inspired in me by the dulcet, breathy tone of the mythical reed instrument. The earthy and at the same time celestial strains compounded by these musical notes conjour the cooing, sighing, and passion of feminine beauty. The opening bars are suggestive with the approach of the lovers as subtext. Atonal and impressionistic whole-tone runs and roulades mount to the first climax of the lover’s tryst in the G flat measures, numbers 19 and 20. With the grace notes the lovers reach out to each other as their time together becomes more and more scarce.
But they do not dissent or retreat in the face of emotion as a second climax, prepared by the fleeting grace notes, finds a vision of unappeasable hope in the trilling F sharp. Their passion spent, the momentary end to the lover’s union is announced with the trilling F natural leading to a vanishing but anticipatory conclusion.
