The new Chamber Concerto has some connections to de Falla’s concerto for harpsichord and 5 instruments. The idea of a sextet with all parts concertato is heralded in that work as well as the Poulenc sextet. My opening movement is in sonata form, and really may be heard that way in performance. In the 2nd movement, I have transcribed the memorial piece for the victims of 9/11 from my 3rd Symphony. Its style is like a Brahm’s slow movement but with added 2nds on the notes of chords. The 3rd movement is a war-like scherzo, whereas the last movement borrows a 5 note motif from Bach’s fugue in E from WTC 1. Stravinsky borrowed the same notes in the last movement of his concerto for 2 pianos. The piece becomes brighter and happier, ending with a note of joyous triumph.
