Antoni Serra Oribe
He was born in Lleida on 12 August 1932.
At the age of 8 he started his music-theory and saxophone studies at the Municipal Music School there under Manel Calpe. Later on he took clarinet classes.
In 1948, at the age of 15, he joined up as a volunteer for the Music service of the Mountain Group No. 1 of the Lleida garrison, where he stayed until 1952 when he won the pertinent competitive entrance examinations and was promoted to sergeant specialising in the requinto (a small clarinet). He studied the piano for three years with Lluís Carreras, and further studies with Josep Garcia i Garcia, the captain in charge of music, and with Ricard Dorado i Xaneiro, the squadron leader of that corps. He gained his formal qualification, as an external student, at the Zaragoza Music School. In 1982, by competitive examiniation, he was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant and assigned to the Music Section of the Military Delegation of Guipúzcoa.
He is the composer of over one hundred and fifty works, blending the various musical styles of the time, and those works have received many awards in various competions and festivals around Spain. He also composed a number of works for bands: 14 military marches, 2 passacaglias, one Country Water-colour, La Conca de Tremp, and 8 hymns. He wrote, for cobla band plus polyphonic choir or cobla band alone, 22 sardana dances, one march and one mazurka; for unacommpanied polyphonic choir, a pop work; for grallas and tamborí (traditional shawn and tabor-drum), one march; for accordion, one musette waltz and one mazurka; for children's choir, 3 songs; for men's group, one havanera; and for symphony orchestra, 3 pictures on the work of Serafí Pitarra, El bressol de Jesús.
He is now emeritus lieutenant in the Military Musicians corps.
